Physical Therapists Offer Advice to Runners During National ...

The American Physical Therapy Association joins Olympic marathoner, Pacers Running Stores for live and online events

In celebration of National Physical Therapy Month in October, the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) is teaming up with Pacers Running Stores to raise awareness among the running community about injury prevention and improving performance. The education initiative leads up to the 36th annual Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) on October 30, which annually attracts nearly 30,000 runners.

To help marathoners prepare for the race, APTA?s Move Forward campaign will co-host an online runner?s event with Pacers, publish The Physical Therapist?s Guide to Healthy Running, a comprehensive runner?s eGuide, and help runners improve their form through individual running analyses and Q&As at the 2011 Marine Corps Marathon Health and Fitness Expo.

Livestream Event

APTA?s Move Forward campaign is co-hosting ?Running Experts LIVE,? an online event held in partnership with Pacers, on October 12 at 8:00 pm, ET. The livestream will feature Olympic marathon runner Magdalena Lewy Boulet and APTA member physical therapist and spokesperson Robert Gillanders, PT, DPT, who specializes in issues related to running, in a discussion about training technique, injury prevention, and tips for improving performance and finishing strong. Runners can submit questions for the experts online prior to and during the live event by contacting Move Forward via Twitter and Facebook and can view the event at moveforwardpt.com/running. To attend this complimentary event in person, please RSVP via Pacers? Web site at http://bit.ly/runningexpertslive.

Marine Corps Marathon Expo

Physical therapists will be on hand to perform running analyses and provide race-day tips at the Marine Corps Marathon Expo October 27 through October 29 at the DC Armory. Runners can visit the Move Forward booth (134/141) and Pacers booth to meet and talk with physical therapists onsite. The Physical Therapist?s Guide to Healthy Running eGuide, featuring information and tips from physical therapists on successful running and injury prevention, will be available to all race participants and also at moveforwardpt.com/running.

?Distance runners put tremendous stress on their bodies,? said Gillanders. ?As experts in restoring and improving motion, physical therapists are able to analyze running form, identify physical weaknesses, and provide guidance and solutions to runners to improve performance and prevent injury. Finishing a race of any distance is a milestone to celebrate, and we help both experienced and novice runners see it through safely.?

As part of the Physical Therapist?s Guide to Healthy Running eGuide, Pacers has included a coupon for off a purchase of or more at their stores valid through November 5. Runners will also be able to enter to win product giveaways from Pacers at the Move Forward Marine Corps Marathon Booth.

?The DC Metro Area is a haven for committed runners, and the Marine Corps Marathon is the area?s premier event,? said Chris Farley, owner and general manager of Pacers Running Stores. ?Our hope is that through our work with APTA?s Move Forward campaign, runners will be well prepared to enjoy the wonderful sport of running.?
