State Bar Awards Legal Services Grants

Las Vegas -- The State Bar of Nevada's Lawyer Referral and Information Service is distributing $285,810 in grants to Nevada non-profit organizations dedicated to providing legal services and education to the community.

Southern Nevada recipients will receive their grants at a luncheon Thursday at the Renaissance hotel in Las Vegas, with Mayor Carolyn Goodman serving as keynote speaker. Northern Nevada recipients received their grants on May 9 at a luncheon hosted by the Washoe County Bar Association.

The grants are awarded to those programs?determined to be most closely aligned with the mission of the state bar and?its lawyer referral?program, a non-profit service that provides free lawyer referrals to the public.

"The State Bar is firmly committed to supporting law-related education and access to justice programs" Kimberly Farmer, the state bar's executive director, said.?"The State Bar of Nevada LRIS Grant Award Program exemplifies the commitment to improve access to the legal system, to improve administration of justice, to promote better access to legal information, and to provide public education about our legal system."

Grant funds were awarded to:

Advanced Technologies Academy?for Regional Mock Trial Competition; Northeastern Nevada CASA?for recruiting, training and appointing volunteers; Clark County Law Foundation?for the Trial By Peers program; Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada?for the Educational Surrogate Parent program; Las Vegas National Bar Association Foundation?for the MLK Drum Major for Justice Advocacy contest and for an African American legal history exhibit; Nevada Foundation for Consumer Education for the People's Law School and the Speaker's Bureau; and Nevada Legal Services?for Tribal Court advocate training and for multimedia community education.

Grants were also awarded to Nevada Network Against Domestic Violence?for reprinting and distribution of a domestic violence handbook; Project REAL for publication of the "Play by the Rules" textbook and funding for court tours; Rocky Mountain Innocence Center?for correction and prevention of wrongful accusations and convictions; Southern Nevada Senior Law Project?for technical support, rebranding of materials, events and training; State Bar Diversity Committee for two diversity scholarships; and?State Bar Law Related Education?for Regional Mock Trial Competition.

An international team of scientists in the University of Leicester's Department of Geology has found a solution to a research problem involving fossils right next door - in the University's Chemistry Department.

Many objects, including fossils, can reveal a huge amount of scientific information when studied using the high power magnification of electron microscopes, but in order to study tiny fossils or microscopic details of larger fossils in this way, palaeontologists routinely coat the fossils with an ultra-thin layer of gold. This obviously changes the way the fossil looks, and so it is often necessary to remove the gold after analysis, but this is difficult and expensive and uses dangerous chemicals like cyanide.

University of Leicester chemists are developing industrial electro-plating and polishing techniques using liquid salts called 'ionic liquids' which are safe, cheap and environmentally friendly. Scientists from the two departments got together to see whether a similar process could be used on fossils. The work was supported by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).

They found that ionic liquids can remove gold quickly and easily without damaging even tiny, delicate fossils. The liquids are safe to handle, can be simply disposed of and can even dissolve the gold without affecting the glue that holds the fossil specimen in place for analysis.

Professor Mark Purnell, from the Department of Geology, said: "There are many cases where collecting the evidence required for research affects fossils or other objects in ways that might be considered as somewhat destructive ? gold coating for electron microscopy falls into this category. Understandably, this creates problems for places like museums which have to balance the value of research on their collections against the risk that specimens will be affected. This approach to gold removal offers a new way of tackling this problem that is safe for both researchers and the specimens."

Professor Andy Abbott, from the Department of Chemistry, added: "This is a very nice demonstration of the use of ionic liquids for metal recovery but it is just the tip of the iceberg as we are using this technology for the recycling of a wide range of alloys and waste materials. The University of Leicester is building a strong reputation for the development of sustainable materials."

He enjoyed minor success in Europe with his track "Saved by the Bell", but his album, "Robin's Reign", struggled to make much of an impact on the charts and he decided to reunite with Barry and Maurice just a year later.

The trio's popularity began to wane and it wasn't until the mid-1970s that they returned to prominence with the disco hit "Jive Talkin'". Follow-up tracks like "How Deep Is Your Love", "Stayin' Alive" and "Night Fever" - all from the bestselling Saturday Night Fever movie soundtrack - cemented the Bee Gees' place in history as one of the most successful acts of all time with total record sales in excess of 220 million.

The "Tragedy" hitmakers, who also penned songs for Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross, Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers, were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. The Grammy Award winners disbanded in 2003 upon the death of Maurice Gibb, and it wasn't until 2009 that Barry and Robin decided to reteam and occasionally perform as the Bee Gees.

Robin, who had resumed his solo work, suffered a career setback in August, 2010 when he was hospitalized with stomach pains after performing in Belgium.

He underwent emergency surgery for a blocked intestine - the same condition which killed his brother Maurice.

He bounced back from the medical emergency, but his health continued to cause him problems and he was forced to cancel a string of appearances in 2011. In November, it was reported that Robin, who had been pictured looking frail and gaunt, had been diagnosed with liver cancer, and he confirmed the news in January, revealing that doctors had found a tumour in his colon 18 months earlier, before the disease spread to his liver.

He underwent intensive chemotherapy treatment and spent the first quarter of 2012 in and out of hospital due to various operations, but managed to muster enough energy to return to the stage in February to perform with military singers The Soldiers for London's Coming Home charity concert, in support of injured servicemen.

In early April, Robin announced his cancer was in remission, saying, "The results of my treatment have been spectacular - that's the doctors' verdict. They're completely stunned by my progress and it gets better all the time. The speed of the treatment and the results have overwhelmed everybody. All the doctors have said so."

LINCOLNVILLE, MAINE- Multiple international staff members will be returning this summer to lead educational programming at Tanglewood 4-H Camp and Learning Center. Counselors from Russia, Columbia, Finland and the UK will work with our American staff members to educate campers at Tanglewood?s residential camp about sustainable living through fun and creative activities. With new games, cultural traditions, dances and recipes of favorite foods campers and staff make discoveries on how big the world is and how small it can be.

Tanglewood offers weekly residential programs throughout the summer starting on June 27th with a three day Mini-Camp for campers looking for a shorter camp experience. Mini-campers enjoy two nights of exciting traditional Tanglewood programming including creative arts, hiking, swimming and group games. Mom speaks out over school's Facebook snooping

A mother who says her middle-school daughter was forced to let school officials browse the 13-year-old girl?s private Facebook page is speaking out against the practice because, she says, "other parents are scared to talk about it."

Pam Broviak, who lives in the Chicago suburb of Geneva, Ill., says her daughter was traumatized when the?principal of Geneva Middle School South forced the child to log in to her Facebook account, then rummaged through the girl's private information.

"What a violation of my daughter's privacy this whole episode was," Broviak said. The incident took "a huge toll on my daughter, who ended up crying through most of the rest of the day and therefore missed most of her classes. She was embarrassed and very upset."

There have been several descriptions lately of Facebook prying by schools ? and one lawsuit was filed recently by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of an anonymous plaintiff against a school district that allegedly demanded a student?s social media passwords. But Broviak may be the first parent to go public with concerns about what she sees as serious violations of student privacy.

In a conversation with msnbc.com, Broviak said she confronted school officials about the incident involving her daughter soon after it occurred last fall and was told that they routinely investigate student issues by asking kids to log into their social networking pages -- or cellphones -- in the presence of administrators. And she said her daughter and other students told her they are frequently called into the principal?s office and told that they can?t leave until they surrender their passwords or unlock their phones and allow school officials to browse their personal information.

"(Students) let them see the accounts because otherwise, they are not allowed to leave the room. And that is just wrong," she said.

Kent Mutchler, superintendent of Geneva schools, said in an interview with msnbc.com that he couldn't comment on Broviak?s daughter because privacy rules prevent him from publicly discussing an individual student?s situation. But he said Broviak's description of district policy is inaccurate.

"We would never demand someone's password. When you have someone's password, you open yourself up to other issues," Mutchler said. "But if we have a disruptive situation, a school (official) will ask to see the page, and if the student refuses, we call the parents."

But principals only request access to students' social media pages under extreme circumstances, Mutchler said.

"There are different levels of concern. If there is a drug trafficking suspicion, we'll get the police involved. If it's something like cyberbullying, we'll say, 'This has been reported to us,' and ask to see the page," he said.

Often, students volunteer before they are even asked, he said.

"We ask, 'Is there something you want to show us?' that sort of thing. And they volunteer," he said.?

Such incidents are very rare among district middle schools, he said, contradicting Broviak's assertion that the inspections are commonplace.?

"It happens a half-dozen to a dozen times per year," he said.

Broviak's public complaint comes at a time when schools, employers and lawmakers around the country are wrestling with sticky privacy issues surrounding social networks. The state Legislature in Illinois is considering legislation that would make it illegal for employers to demand access to workers? or applicants? private social media information. That law is silent on the issue of schools and social media snooping, but federal legislation introduced last month by Rep. Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., would extend the protections to students, too.

Broviak said she didn't think school officials should ever look at a child's personal social media page or cellphone without first contacting parents.

"It's just wrong for them to do this, but parents are afraid to talk about it, because they are worried, 'Are they going to target my kid?'" she said.

Additionally, she said, looking at a kids' social media page violates an entire family's privacy, even if school officials don?t intend to look at posts involving other family members.

"The whole family is exposed in this," she said. "Some families communicate through Facebook. What if her aunt was going through a divorce or had an illness? And now there's these anonymous people reading through this information."

When the first incident occurred in the fall, Broviak said she didn't know what to do -- and initially chose to let it drop for fear that complaining might make things worse for her daughter. But she said reports from her daughter that other kids have been treated the same way and a recent spate of news stories surrounding the issue pushed her to speak up. Three weeks ago she published a detailed accounting of events on her personal blog, and this week agreed to be interviewed by msnbc.com.

"It's really important for people to talk about this and know what's going on," she said. "And I'm really glad that the state Legislature and Congress are considering laws to deal with this."

Her daughter, meanwhile, has learned an important but sad lesson through this experience, Broviak said.

"It's taught her to use better judgment with adults," she said. "Basically, what (they) showed her was you can?t trust anyone. Her trust in and the respect of the adults at her school has been shattered to the point that she is struggling to look beyond this abuse and allow for the education process to occur."
